MYSTICAL SHANGRI LA

Sikkim is a land of monumental mountains that seem to touch the sky. The mountains form a part of long and mighty Himalaya. Kanchenjunga, the third highest peak in the world, crowns the top with its rugged outline. Sikkim, a state of India, shares her borders with Tibet to the north, Bhutan to the east and Nepal to the west. The flora and fauna naturally covers a wide spectrum as no where else in the world. In such a small area one can find 400 varieties of flowering plants, orchids and rhododendrons. Naturalists have listed over 550 species of birds and over 600 species of butterflies. Animals to be found are Himalayan bear, musk deer, barking deer, red panda and the blue sheep. The people of Sikkim are of three distinct heritage. The Lepchas, Bhutias and the Nepalese. Sikkimese by nature are simple, polite and non aggressive people with a natural gaiety.

History : Sikkim, once the independent Kingdom, was ruled by Namgyal dynasty, Chogyal, for more than three hundreds years. The last ruler of the Sikkim was Palden Thundop Namgyal and the monarchy was ended in 1975. The Kingdom became 22 nd state of republic of India on 26 th April 1975. 

Natural : The state is heavily forested and abounds with the wildlife, rhododendrons and greater verities of orchids and wild flowers. About one third of the total area is covered with forest and is traversed by the main range of the Himalaya. The bio-diversity of the area ranges 250m above sea level to 8586m, summit of Mt Kanchenjunga, third highest mountain in the world.  

Geography: Sikkim is located in the north-eastern part of the India. The area of this land is 7096 sq. Km and is bounded by Tibet Autonomous region of China in the north and north-east, Bhutan in the north-south, West Bangal in South and Nepal in the west. 

People: The total population of state is approx 420000 and main inhabitants are Nepalese, Bhutia and Lepcha. Sikkimis and Nepali are principal local language where English is national language. Buddhisum and Hinduism are the principal religion. Agriculture is the main source of income for Sikkimis people where Tourism is also a growing industry.

Entry procedure: Indian Visa is required to enter Sikkim, and it can be obtained from the any Indian Embassy and consulate office around the world. A two copies passport sized photograph is required to proceed the application form and visa is normally valid for 6 months.

Access: Indian airline has a greater linkage to reach Sikkim, Baghdora airport is the only nearest airport and is 124 KM far from Gangtok. Domestic airport in Bhadrapur, Nepal is second nearest airport to reach Sikkim and is 146 KM far from Gangtok. Well road connection made easier to reach Sikkim.

Visa & Permit  : All foreign tourist require an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to enter Sikkim. An ILP is valid for 15 days & can be extended by the State government twice for 30 days of 15 days each.

Trekking permit are required. Trekking is only allowed in groups (minimum two persons) and must be arranged through a travel agent.

B.1. KISHONG TREK

The trekking region we visit is totally new and hardly any western tourist have visited. This is north of Sikkim going to Kishong Lake through beautiful forest and green valleys of Sikkim. This is the most rewarding trek for trekkers will about 5 days time at their disposal. Rinzing Namgyal started his survey in 1878. This Tholong valley is very elevated, rigged tract of loft mountains.

Day 04. Lingza to tsana
Day 05 .Tsana to Tholung Gompa.
Day 06. Tholung.
Day 07. Trek to Kishong Lake.
Day 08. Trek to Yungcho.
Day 09. Trek to Dawathang.
Day 10. Trek to Tholung Gompa.
Day 11. Back to Lingza.
Day 12. Drive to Gangtok.
Day 13. Drive to Kathmandu.

B.2  TOSAR LAKE TREK

This trek follow old traditional yak and cow trails in the Reserve forest starting from Naga, Meyong, and Kaley with an altitude ranging from 1800 meters to 4000 meters at Tosar lake. It passes through wet temperature forest of broad leaved species and bamboos, temperate forest of conifer and queraus, rhodendron and moist alpine.

Sikkim's near about 200 monasteries or Gompas belonging to the Nyingma and Kagyu order have not only been influencing the cultural heritage and lifestyle of the people, but also demonstrates the ancient rituals in practice. Devoted Lamas robed in red, chant ancient mantras to the rhythm of drums and trumpets while soft lights flicker from decorative lamps placed before statues of the great Guru Padmasambhava. B.5  Birding In Sikkim

Beside the great monastery and the flora, Sikkim can also be experienced to see rare species of birds. From the valley of Pelling, and Lava that is a prime birding destination in this region. The remote and uninhabited Neora Valley National Park, to Damthang forest, species we might see are: Eurasian Buzzard, Eurasian Kestrel, Green Billed Malkhoa, Dollarbird, Black winged Cuckoo etc. Some of the best birds are migrant ducks, black necked grebe, Baer's pochard, speckled wood pigeon, Emerald Cuckoo.
